If you’re following along with my search for the perfect cap-toe flat shoe, I’m here with an update!
As I mentioned in my last post, I’d decided to try out two pairs: the Index by French Sole, and Rothy’s The Square. I ordered a pair of each, just to get an idea of which one was the most comfortable and fit my current lifestyle and wardrobe. When I made my orders, I was almost certain I already knew which pair I would like better – and I thought that was going to be the French Sole pair!
Even though ballet flats are “in” again this season, they’re a classic and a big part of my personal style and never really go out of style in my wardrobe. Plus, I’ve been trying to find a pair of cap-toe ballet flats for a long time! All that to say, I came into this project totally willing to splurge a little on something that I plan to have around for a long time to come.
While the French Sole flats are absolutely beautiful and of amazing quality, ultimately Rothy’s The Square turned out to be the best choice for me. I want to get into all the details about the Rothy’s flats I chose to keep, but first, let’s take a quick look at the French Sole Index.
French Sole Index Mini-Review
These flats are absolutely beautiful and have that classic leather ballet flat look I really wanted to achieve. But, for me, they have a couple of flaws. First, the toe vamp is really low and shows a lot of my foot. While this can be a really lovely look, ultimately I just wanted that vamp to be a little bit higher for my liking. The second thing was that while these shoes were some of the most comfortable ballet flats I’ve ever tried on, once I tried on the Rothy’s for comparison, it was really no contest. As great as these shoes are, they’re going to be a return for me!
Rothy’s The Square Review
On to the Rothy’s! Originally, I was thinking that these flats might have a more casual look than what I wanted. I was worried that with my usual fall wardrobe of jeans, sweaters, and casual tops, they might not “elevate” a casual look. But when I opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised at how chic these flats look in person. Let’s take a look!
The thing that really made me fall in love with this particular pair is that they are super comfortable. That’s a plus for every day, but I can absolutely see myself wearing these when I need to do a lot of walking. Ultimately, I’m thinking these shoes will get a ton of wear, both at home and for travel.
The shape of the toe is perfect – not too square, but not too rounded – and it doesn’t squish my feet. Plus, check out that higher vamp!
Rothy’s The Square sizing
Rothy’s recommends going up a half size, which worked for me. They fit exactly perfectly without being even a little bit snug. Basically, I have the perfect amount of room if I want to add a cushy insert for extra support. I think I also could have probably taken my normal size, but I’m impatient and didn’t want to go through the exchange process. If you want to play it safe, order both your regular size and a half size up and just keep the one that fits best!
Overall, I’m very happy with Rothy’s The Square! They’re super comfortable, stylish, and they’ve already become my go-to slip-on shoe to quickly elevate a casual outfit.
